| The Social Health of the Nation |
| A book review by ISP President Ralph Widner of "The Social Health of the Nation: How America is Really Doing" by Marc Miringoff and Marque-Luisa Miringoff, Oxford University Press, NY/Oxford; 1999. The review praises the Miringoffs and their associates for continuing to press the claim for more coherent use of non-economic indicators to gauge a population's well-being. He asks the question: if we implemented the Miringoffs' recommendations and applied social indicators to the same degree that policy-makers use economic indicators, would that obviate the need for quantifications of the sort urged by paneticists? He concludes that the two efforts "to measure" are complementary. Neither substitutes for the other. |
